Southside Virginia, which includes the counties of Prince Edward, Charlotte, Lunenburg, Nottoway, Buckingham, Cumberland, Appomattox, and Amelia, has a wide variety of local health care services. Southside Community Hospital, a progressive acute care facility, offers many services to meet the needs of the communities it serves. The hospital has an interesting beginning: it actually started as an experiment. In the mid-1920’s the Commonwealth Fund of New York provided funds to determine if proper health care could be provided in a rural setting and because of persistence and community determination, the doors of Southside Community Hospital opened with 40 beds in November 1927. Through the years, the hospital has continued to grow and meet more challenging health care needs.
From that very first day in November 1927 until today, Southside Community Hospital has allocated resources to meet the needs and improve the health of the communities it serves. In 1979, Southside Community Hospital built the patient tower, which increased the bed size to 116. In 1987, the fourth floor was added, giving the community the latest in surgical services. The remaining shell of the fourth floor was renovated into the Same-Day Surgery Suite in 1995, enhancing the outpatient and surgical services. Through the entrance of the ambulatory care building, patients will find convenient access to emergency services and the new Imaging Center, complete with a state-of-the-art multi-slice CT scanner. Housed in the same convenient locations are laboratory services, outpatient diagnostic services and private physician offices.
Advancements in technology, medical science, and the delivery of care have marked the evolution of the hospital. The most important assets are the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers who make Southside Community Hospital successful. Today, SCH employs nearly 500 people, with a medical staff of approximately 100. The staff is the heart of the hospital, providing personalized care and treatment. SCH is committed to advancing health education and to that end has relationships with several patient care educational programs as well as serves a site for graduate medical educational experiences for physicians.

Our area is fortunate to have physicians specializing in areas such as pediatrics, women’s health care, neurology, otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat), dental, eye care, pulmonary care, and other specialized care needed to provide the best to make our community a healthy place to live. This area boasts several home health and medical supply providers. You can also find nursing homes and assisted living facilities in our area.
