Spring is finally here and it is time for the 25th Annual Virginia Catfish Festival sponsored by the Southside Shrine Club. In addition to delicious farm-raised catfish, attendees will enjoy catfish gumbo, baked beans, hush puppies, coleslaw, grits, hot dogs, coffee, lemonade, iced tea, soft drinks and Lite beer. Bring a lawn chair, enjoy music and eat outside!
In addition to the food and drink, attendees will enjoy great music by local bands Angie Gail & The Double Crossed Band, Country Fried Grass, and Dark Hollow. Get your friends together; bring your lawn chairs and journey to Farmville for a fulfilled evening of bluegrass music and good eating and you will be helping the Shriner kids!!!
The Shriners Hospitals for Children is a system of 22 hospitals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico who provide medical care to children suffering from orthopedic problems, burn injuries, club foot, spinal bifida, spinal injuries, brittle bone disease, cerebral palsy, and cleft lip and palate. This care is provided without financial obligation to the child or his/her parents. At the present time over 500 children from Central and Southside Virginia are being treated in the Shriners hospitals. This includes about 35 children from Southside Virginia. In addition to the treatment, ACCA Shriners provides free transportation, food and lodging for those patients needing these services. Last year ACCA spent in excess of $60,000 providing this service. At the present time, most ACCA sponsored patients are being treated at hospitals in Greenville, South Carolina and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for orthopedic problems and Cincinnati, Ohio for burn injuries.
