Name: L'Orfeo performed by Longwood voice majors
    Date: November 10, 2012
    Time: 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM EST
    Event Description:
Voice majors in the Department of Music will perform the operatic masterpiece L'Orfeo on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Molnar Recital Hall in Wygal. In addition to all of the voice majors (about 35), the performance will include an orchestra made up of several professional musicians and student volunteers. L'Orfeo, an Italian opera composed by Claudio Monteverdi from the early Baroque era, is "considered the first great opera ever composed," said Dr. Christopher Swanson, associate professor of music, who, in lieu of a faculty recital this year, will perform the title role of the opera. The rest of the cast will be performed by students. "Our performances are concert-style, which means there will be no costumes or scenery as an opera would normally have. We will have super-titles – English translation will be projected above the stage throughout the performance," Swanson said. Last fall he and Dr. Jennifer Capaldo, assistant professor of music, produced the opera of Dido and Aeneas by Purcell. "We are hopeful that performing operatic masterpieces will become a regular occurrence in the music department," said Swanson.
